**We need help with storage space - please get in touch if you can help**
Quite simply, we give away books. We want to:
Free-books.org.uk are a charity organisation, founded by a group of people who want to spread the love of reading to all.
The benefits of reading are recognised throughout society: it nurtures the imagination and the soul. With many libraries struggling to remain open, our free books project aims to put free literature into the community.
According to the National Literacy Trust, 1 in 8 disadvantaged children in the UK don’t own a single book. This is particularly shocking when we learn that their report “Book ownership and reading outcomes’ reveals that children who do own a book are 15 times more likely to read above the expected level for their age.
A group of County Durham based reading advocates have vowed to put an end to ‘non-book-ownership’ for households in the area, through this project.
As County Durham is one of the poorest regions in Northern Europe, it is likely that children are disproportionately affected by these statistics, so the Free Books Project want to do what their name suggests - give away free books.
The first free book give-away was hosted by Collierley Nursery and Primary School, Dipton, and we hope to make this a regular event at schools in the area.
If your school would like to host a free event, please register your interest.
The Free Books project operates as an unregistered charity. Currently no money changes hands and no data is collected or stored.
We operate under the umbrella of The Leadgate Task Force and in association with the Derwent Valley Litfest and The Punctuation Show.
Our vision is to work with schools and other educational establishments in order to ensure that no household is book free.
